Not the Not the Heinie Quarter-Finals Poll

And there we have it: another seismic weekend of European Rugby over, with three tight-as-they-come thrillers and something best forgotten in North London. Who makes your team of the Big Cup Quarters?

Not the Not the Heinie Quarter-Finals Poll

I know, I know. Because of blatant prejudice on behalf of the organisers, you can’t pick any Sale players, even though they managed not to throw away a big first half lead, on the piddling grounds that they’re not in the Big Cup. Outrageous. You’ll just have to make do with this lot instead.

Sadly, you can’t vote for the best try of the weekend.

  1. Just been told my car needs to be fixed and it will be £3k.

I’ve looked online and there’s a couple of things to try before doing that. The garage wasn’t specific about the tests they’d done so I think they might be trying to get me to do the most expensive option. I fucking hope so anyway. The car can be driven so I’m hopeful*.

Does anyone want to buy my car?

    * not sure why given my recent run of luck.

  2. @OurTerry>

I’m trying to wrap my head around their concept of collective narcissism and how they measured it.

    It’s very strange.

If you don’t think having more people representing your views holding political power would make the world a better place why are they your political views?

Potentially just measuring something else like scepticism in general maybe?

    Social psychologists are weird.

  3. Just got an email from Strava, my GPS thing I use for running. It said “well done, you’ve ran 95km this month. This is 36 less km than you ran last month”

    Prick.

I’m talking about the paper, not him.

I don’t think it’d get through review at a political science journal, or not a top one anyway. Findings for the first two studies are not that new.

The third study is potentially interesting. Though the three way interaction is weird and very difficult to interpret the reliability of it as they haven’t presented any evidence of the distribution of the moderating variables. It’s preregistered, so it’s not data mining I just don’t know how robust or reliable it is.

Also, weirdly the study 3 isn’t about fake news but willingness to believe true stories.

Also, comparing Trump to Obama is weird because one is in power and one isn’t the salience is going to differ making the treatments that liberals are being exposed to potentially a lot stronger. The Brexit one is probably better in this regard, but again I think you could argue the situations are quite different for remainers and leavers given the result of the referendum.

Another way their treatment sucks is that they chose a topic that has been pushed by Republicans for years so Republicans might have been primed to respond more.

They really didn’t think this through, probably because they’re psychologists from the UK ignoring the vast American politics literature.

What league to Dunbar/Dunbar 2s play in? Can’t see them in the East Reserve leagues…

Sorry, I missed this first time around.

Dunbar 1sts are in East 2, the 2nds are in East Development, which includes ‘Sonians 4ths by the looks of things

  7. @HairBearHero>

More needs to be done to turn rugby clubs back into social hubs

Agree with this. We’re trying to get a 2nds for next year – problem is fixtures. Our local rivals are low on numbers and we’re trying to avoid the 100-120km drive to Cork or Limerick just to give the J2s a game.

Numbers at Minis (U12 and below are good) even ok at U14 and U16. We’re looking at starting a women’s team.

Drop off starts at U17 – the 16yo cohort feel a bit under-powered to play U18s and this was worsened rather than improved by moving the age bracket at U18 to U18.5, The idea was meant to keep 18 year olds playing – but seems to have frightened off 16 year olds who don’t fancy playing lads up to 2 years older than them.

J2 – if it comes off – would give an opening to guys who are happy to train but don’t want to play J1 or can’t afford the time plus anyone coming up from U18. Might even attract back a few old players – or a few ‘bad’ players.

Overall, we’re not in a bad place – but seeing posts about 3rd and 4ths seems like another world to us. If can get a 2nds/J2 team/league going we’ll see that as a major success.

I used to mark 1st year lab scripts. I always felt a bit uncomfortable because it was so subjective. Although the students didn’t seem too bothered – they just wanted to get to the pub as soon as they could.

  10. @OurTerry>

I worry less about that now than I used to. Very rarely do you discover you are miles off their usual performance. Sometimes it happens, but not often.

The problem for students here is it is all down to this 4th year, so they care too much about this year and not enough about the previous 3.

I must be going blind, completely missed them.

Aye, our 4s play in that league. It’s a very odd standard but quite wholesome in terms of teams helping each other out/willingness to play games with reduced numbers etc. – most likely because it’s deliberately non-competitive.

It’s been a bit shite this year by all accounts – for the reasons you mentioned previously.

  12. @CJ>

This is 36 less km than you ran last month”

Worse – it should be ‘fewer’, not ‘less’.

  13. @Chekhovian>

The OED shows that less has been used of countables since the time of King Alfred the Great — he used it that way in one of his own translations from Latin

King Alfred didn’t defeat the Danes so grammar prescriptivists like you could bully people into using fewer all the damn time.

Tell me about it….#1 is in 4th year on placement in Stockholm(she is home next week) as also in the middle of a thesis and has final exams to do. I was tough with her away since Christmas but I have to admit I’m not looking forward to the next month or so of stress.
#2 is in 3rd year which apparently is the last year cos the 4th year is all placement and an exam that no one fails.

#4 is doing the Junior Cert and less of a fuck could she give
